When we talk about sexual exploitation and abuse, particularly in humanitarian settings, we speak of serious misconduct that violates the values we stand for as humanitarians. This is why the work of our focal points across operations is key to making protection from sexual exploitation and abuse?(PSEA) central to our response.

This week, we hear from Zoulfaou Dankourma about driving system-wide change to protect communities against sexual exploitation and abuse:

What does your role as a protection from sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA) focal point involve?

In?2023, I became PSEA focal point with the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Burkina Faso.

I am actively engaged in strengthening our internal and inter-agency efforts to prevent and combat sexual exploitation and abuse in humanitarian operations.

What really motivated me is a deep commitment to upholding the dignity, safety, and rights of vulnerable people in crisis settings.

I strongly believe humanitarian actors must lead by example, which means ensuring that our systems and personnel adhere to the highest standards of conduct.

This is why I am so proud that in Burkina Faso, we are currently working on finalizing the office-wide PSEA action plan, which I feel will hugely help our collective advocacy for a more accountable system across the board.

What do you enjoy most about this role?

The sense of purpose that comes from protecting the dignity and rights of vulnerable individuals is something I find incredibly fulfilling.

It is rewarding to know that my work helps prevent harm and supports survivors in getting the care and justice they deserve.

I also appreciate the collaborative aspect of working with diverse teams, partners, and communities to raise awareness and strengthen systems.

Every PSEA training, PSEA coordination meeting, or field visit is an opportunity to learn, share, and grow together.

In a role that combines technical knowledge, empathy, and advocacy, I am proud to be contributing to a more ethical and respectful humanitarian response.
