How is climate change affecting Rio de Janeiro?
Climate change poses significant challenges to Rio de Janeiro, exacerbated by its coastal location. Rising temperatures intensify heatwaves, impacting public health, while altered rainfall patterns increase the risk of floods and landslides, particularly in low-income hillside communities.These risks intersect with historical housing challenges and inequalities, making adaptation not only urgent but also a matter of climate justice.
What action are you taking to address climate change?
The city of Rio de Janeiro has implemented several proactive measures to enhance climate resilience. Our Center of Operations serves as a centralized command hub, integrating data from over 30 agencies to respond swiftly to weather-related emergencies such as heavy rains and heatwaves. We've installed siren systems and shelters in vulnerable hillside communities, ensuring residents have safe havens during storms, thereby saving lives. To address flooding, we've developed underground reservoirs in critical areas and are exploring advanced technologies from Denmark for flood protection. Recently, we established a specialized committee to anticipate and mitigate future sea-level rise impacts through strategic partnerships.
Rio also pioneered Latin America's use of power purchase agreements to power municipal buildings with renewable energy. We've designated a Low Emissions District in the city center and are actively developing a baseline, action roadmap and communication strategy to further our climate goals. Incentives, such as tax breaks for businesses participating in the voluntary carbon market, encourage broader climate action. Our efforts also extend to decarbonizing transportation, with a new tram and Bus Rapid Transit system, reducing the number of cars in the streets. Over the years, we've created six new parks in heat-prone areas, expanded tree planting in the Port region and expanded bike lanes, promoting sustainable urban living.
